“Told you this place was a shithole,” Rob Van Dam turned around to tell me and Chris as we entered a hollowed out hockey rink time-capsuled an hour outside of Pittsburgh. “Time-capsuled” may be the most eloquent way to put this venue and “shithole” was being generous by Rob who had wrestled there on numerous occasions during his ECW days.
As a matter of fact, The Rostraver Ice Gardens looked like either a level from Fallout or an alternate filming location for Saw II but tonight it would be showcasing Rob in the main event for Internatiol Wrestling Cartel. Van Dam went out and put on the signature fight he was known for, this time with the addition of errant paint chips being strewn throughout his signature singlet (probably still from when the roof caved in on this shithole about ten years back)
Serendipitously enough, Rob was making his way to the Pittsburgh area only after about ten days when we first talked on the phone about starting a podcast together. The details weren’t fully hammered out, but a plan was laid out. Meeting up clearly was the call to make, giving us plenty to cover for our first recording. It certainly felt right for Chris, Rob’s YouTube man, who had a short drive from Steubenville, OH (home of DeAngelo favorite Dean Martin) to finally meet RVD in person for the first time.
This stop in Pittsburgh was sandwiched in between two television appearances for Rob as he was one of the few WWE Hall Of Famers brought back to help elevate the annual WWE Draft. Both those appearances were in the great state of Texas, so Rob was doubling back on a flight the next day at 5 PM. However, right now it was 11:30 PM on a Saturday night in rural Pennsylvania. Food options were basically non-existent but hunger was across the board. However, you could tell by RVD’s patient nature that he was well-versed in such predicaments. The only option seemed to be Sheetz, but the midnight oil of Applebee’s ended up still burning. We actually found a place to sit down, have a beer and shake out the paint chips.
That weekend, as “one of a kind “ as it was for me, was second nature for RVD. We cover that style of living in the debut episode of “1 Of A Kind.” We also cover Rob’s experience being back on WWE television which had many of the stars of today saying Van Dam should be announcing his own name as a draft pick. Mr. Monday Night can still go any day of the week, but Monday is when “1 Of Kind With RVD” will be dropping, starting May 22 at 4:20 PM ET. However, you can always get it early and in full video form on the upstart Premier Streaming Network, starting this Friday May 19. The official announcement on that is below.
Rob Van Dam’s “1 of a Kind” Set To Join Premier Streaming Network
In an industry full of unique talents and personalities, no one has been able to stand out quite like WWE Hall of Famer and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) icon Rob Van Dam. RVD has done it all in professional wrestling, from revolutionizing the hardcore style in ECW with an athleticism and charisma that captured the admiration and imagination from the audience, to winning the WWE Championship. Now, the former ‘Mr. Monday Night’ and ‘Mr. Pay-Per-View’ is set to become ‘Mr. PSN’ as he is joining the Premier Streaming Network with his own show, “One of a Kind with RVD.”
Premiering on PSN this Friday, May 19th, and available across all podcast platforms on Monday, May 22nd, “1 of a Kind with RVD” will give viewers and listeners a peak inside the mind of RVD as he and co-host Dominic DeAngelo converse about the current state of professional wrestling, take a look back at some of Rob’s classic matches and feuds, and even stray into discussions about life advice, perspective and philosophy in an “Enlighten One Up” segment.
“Rob and I are extremely excited to present this new series as we cover his storied work inside the squared circle, and his unique life outside of it,” said DeAngelo. “You’ll get a great look at why Rob is truly a ‘one of kind’ individual, which will make the show live up to its namesake. As someone who built a wrestling career on stealing the show, I’m confident ‘1 of a Kind’ will become can’t miss entertainment for wrestling fans.”
